Speech practice games

Practice that feels like a game gets done. These ideas all keep the same core loop: hear the word, say the word, celebrate.

Screen-free ideas

No printing, no prep.

  • Treasure hunt: find things around the house that start with the sound
  • Silly sentences: build the daftest sentence you can with three target words
  • Ten-step walk: one target word per step down the hallway
  • Snack sort: name each item on the plate before eating it

Making it a habit

Games work best when they're the same game most days. Rotate slowly, and keep sessions to about five minutes.

A daily digital option

SoundSprout runs the same loop as a narrated story mission: ten target words, a woodland world that wakes up as your child practices, and a streak that rewards showing up.

When a speech-language pathologist can help

SoundSprout is home practice, not an assessment. Talk to a speech-language pathologist (SLP) if any of the following sounds familiar — they can work out which sounds to target and how.

  • People outside the family often can't understand your child
  • Your child is frustrated, avoids speaking, or is being teased
  • A sound your child's peers use easily still isn't there
  • You're simply unsure — an SLP screening is quick and reassuring

Guides for other sounds

Practicing a different sound, or a second child on another one? Each sound has its own plain-language guide.
