F sound practice for kids

A parent-friendly guide to practicing the F sound at home — how it's made, what's typical, words to use and a routine that fits into five minutes.

How the F sound is made

For F the top front teeth rest lightly on the bottom lip and air is blown gently through. The voice is off.

F is very visible, so a mirror works well. Pretend to blow out a birthday candle with the teeth on the lip.

Common substitutions

P or B for F ("pan" for fan) is common in younger children, and some children drop F at the ends of words.

What's typical by age

F is an earlier-developing sound; many U.S. children produce it reliably by around age 3 to 4.

Every child is different, and age ranges from research are guides, not deadlines. If your child is frustrated, hard to understand, or you're unsure, ask a speech-language pathologist.

F words to practice

Start with words your child already knows and likes. Mix positions once the start of the word feels easy.

F at the start of words

  • fish, fan, fox, feet, fire, four

F in the middle of words

  • coffee, muffin, waffle, elephant, sofa

F at the end of words

  • leaf, knife, off, giraffe, roof

Short phrases

  • four funny fish
  • a fox on the sofa
  • leaf by leaf

A five-minute routine

  • Say the word clearly and a little slowly — let your child hear it first
  • Invite one or two tries; no more than that per word
  • Praise the effort ("great try!"), not only the perfect ones
  • Ten words is a full session — stop while it's still fun
  • Same time most days beats a long session once a week

Game idea: Feather blow

Put a feather or tissue on the table. Each F word, your child blows it a little further toward the finish line.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my child say 'pish' for fish?

P stops the air completely, which is easier than a steady F. It is a common early pattern.

How long should we practice F each day?

About five minutes, most days. Short, frequent sessions are easier to keep up and tend to work better than occasional long ones.

Can SoundSprout tell if my child is saying it right?

No. SoundSprout rewards effort and does not score pronunciation. Children's voices are not recorded or uploaded.
