Z sound practice for kids

A parent-friendly guide to practicing the Z sound at home — how it's made, what's typical, words to use and a routine that fits into five minutes.

How the Z sound is made

Z is made exactly like S — tongue tip behind the top teeth, teeth close together — but with the voice on, so it buzzes like a bee.

Start with a long "sss", then "turn on the buzz" to make "zzz". A hand on the throat lets your child feel the difference.

Common substitutions

S for Z ("sue" for zoo) is common, as is a lisp ("thoo"). At the ends of words, English Z often sounds lighter.

What's typical by age

Many U.S. children produce Z reliably by around age 5, often at the same time as S.

Every child is different, and age ranges from research are guides, not deadlines. If your child is frustrated, hard to understand, or you're unsure, ask a speech-language pathologist.

Z words to practice

Start with words your child already knows and likes. Mix positions once the start of the word feels easy.

Z at the start of words

  • zoo, zipper, zebra, zero, zigzag, zoom

Z in the middle of words

  • lazy, puzzle, dizzy, busy, pizza

Z at the end of words

  • buzz, nose, cheese, rose, fizz

Short phrases

  • a lazy zebra
  • buzz, busy bee
  • pizza at the zoo

A five-minute routine

  • Say the word clearly and a little slowly — let your child hear it first
  • Invite one or two tries; no more than that per word
  • Praise the effort ("great try!"), not only the perfect ones
  • Ten words is a full session — stop while it's still fun
  • Same time most days beats a long session once a week

Game idea: Buzzy bee flight

Your child's finger is a bee. It buzzes from flower to flower (cushions, toys) and each landing is one Z word.

Frequently asked questions

Should Z be practiced with S?

They are made the same way, so progress on one often helps the other. Many families practice S first, then Z.

How long should we practice Z each day?

About five minutes, most days. Short, frequent sessions are easier to keep up and tend to work better than occasional long ones.

Can SoundSprout tell if my child is saying it right?

No. SoundSprout rewards effort and does not score pronunciation. Children's voices are not recorded or uploaded.
